Peggotty’s Parlour first opened its doors in 1982, so it’s safe to say this traditional English tea room is one of the grandmothers of Rochester High Street, sitting above the grandfather of the street — Johnstones Tools, established in 1951. Conveniently located directly opposite Rochester Cathedral. The carefully hand-painted sign at the entrance of the inconspicuous doorway is the only clue offering a tantalising hint of what lies beyond.

Climb the narrow staircase and the sweet smell of baking fills the air. Turn the corner and you catch a glimpse of the small, pantry-style kitchen. Step into the parlour and it feels as though you’ve travelled back to a bygone era of the early 1930s. Seated at your table and looking back towards the stairs, you can almost imagine a woman in a tailored navy pencil-skirt suit, court shoes, pearls, and hat. Heading back to the bustle of the high street, leaving behind the lingering scent of Chanel No. 5.

The interiors are simple. Black-and-white framed photographs capture the landmarks of historic Rochester. Tables and chairs are positioned closely together, making the most of the homely space. The patrons perform a gentle dance as they manoeuvre themselves into place. But that’s the beauty of it — you’re just close enough to overhear whispered conversations from neighbouring tables. A shared experience unfolds: the gentle clink of silver forks against china as a generous slice of cake is carefully cut, each teaspoon and fork contributing to the quiet symphony of a beautifully crafted afternoon tea.

Afternoon tea impresses. A large pot of hot tea arrives alongside a three-tiered cake stand, brimming with your own curated selection of beautifully presented sandwiches, cakes, and scones - with the all-important clotted cream and jam. Be sure to try our favourite: the old-fashioned cake topped with raspberry and desiccated coconut. It really is quite special. Service is impeccable, with waitresses dressed in black uniforms and crisp white aprons, perfectly tapping into the 1930s vibe. If you can, ask to be seated by the window — sipping tea while overlooking the cathedral is a quiet treat.

Whether you’ve found yourself at Peggotty’s for a full English breakfast, a light lunch, or afternoon tea, the charm lies in its nostalgic simplicity. You’re not here for grammable, modern glitz. You’re here for the experience — sipping tea in good company, watching postcard-perfect scenes unfold below on Rochester High Street. A visit here feels like a comforting hug.
