Set within the chalk landscape near Halling in Medway, the wellness centre at St Andrews Lakes offers a quiet ritual of heat and cold beside the water.

The lake itself was once a working quarry. Today it forms a broad stretch of clear blue water surrounded by trees and pale chalk cliffs. Although the motorway sits not far away, the atmosphere at the shoreline feels calm and secluded.

The wellness area is arranged simply along the lake’s edge. A wood-fired sauna sits closest to the water, its warm timber interior filling with the scent of heated wood. Nearby, a small cluster of hot tubs look out across the lake while a plunge lagoon provides access to the cold water.

The experience follows a simple rhythm. Time in the sauna or hot tub is followed by a short walk to the plunge lagoon where swimmers descend slowly into the cold lake water. The contrast between heat and cold sharpens the senses and settles into a steady, restorative cycle. Many visitors repeat the sequence several times during a session as the body gradually adjusts.

Many people arrive early in the morning when the lake is at its quietest. Steam rises from the hot tubs as the sun moves across the water and the first swimmers enter the lake.

What makes the experience memorable is its simplicity. Warm timber, cold water and open sky. A calm lakeside setting that offers a gentle reset before the day begins.
